Suddenly, we are forced to work from home. However, with today's online possibilities, that is no reason to stand still, and Veiligheidsregio IJsselland thought so too. They asked us if we could jointly conduct an environmental analysis with them. We wanted to, but we also know that environmental analyses yield the best results when we make them visual, bring together people with different knowledge, and let the analysis arise from interaction. So, we needed software to help us with this.
And we found it. Using videoconferencing, As a mural, we worked on an environmental scan in two sessions and a few hours of homework. MURAL allowed us to brown paper session, in which all participants could provide their input by digitally writing and posting sticky notes. The videoconferencing This made it possible to divide participants into small groups, and thus there was enough space for interaction. Actually no different than in physical workshops.
After organizing the issues and stakeholders in SOM SET, and weighing the interests by the participants, we were ready for the second session. In this session, we re-analyzed the organized output from the first session from MURAL. Together, we determined the priority issues and stakeholders, and provided interpretation for the patterns. At the end of the process, we, 16 professionals each working from their own computer, achieved a great group result in which everyone can see their own contribution.
It has become a very rich analysis that lays a good foundation for formulating an environmental strategy, and is in no way inferior to the analyses we always made in workshops. So, with the right tools, you can achieve great co-creation, even from behind your PC!
