Marc Wesselink He has recorded a video lecture for the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment as part of the developments surrounding the Environmental Act. In his lecture, he explains how decision-making processes can be organized better, more efficiently, and more effectively. Early dialogue is the basis of good environmental management.

Society has changed. Residents are more assertive, have easy access to more information thanks to its online availability, etc. As a result, they are a serious discussion partner and demand to be involved in projects and decision-making.

In his lecture, Marc explains that there are four building blocks for professional stakeholder management. Starting with working from a vision. For this, the Mutual Gains Approach has been developed, which helps in finding solutions based on the interests in the area and strengthens mutual trust between parties. This is followed by a feasible action plan to elevate stakeholder management to a higher level. The starting point is that the issue deserves a solution.

The third building block is about the skills needed to build trust, resolve conflicts based on interests, and arrive at solutions together. This responsibility does not lie solely with the environmental manager. Environmental management is an organizational competence! The fourth building block is about anchoring environmental management in the organization. This involves retaining and making the collective knowledge of environmental issues and stakeholders accessible. But it also concerns ensuring the prerequisites: giving the environment a place in the mission, vision, and strategy. Allocating tasks and responsibilities, developing a toolbox, and involving HR, for example, in recruiting and developing the necessary competencies.
